I was watching MTV and saw an ad encouraging a young man that it's ok to pick up a basketball, it won't kill him. Are we really at the point where we need advertising to SELL 'physical activity' to kids?
Canada's 2007 report card on physical Activity for children and youth is the 3rd annual overview of physical activity levels of Canada's young people. For the 3rd straight year Canada has received a failing grade.
What's the problem? One of the highlights from that 2007 Report card was that kids were spending too much time in front of a screen. One of the recommendation was to engage and empower young people to get active. How do make physical activity more attractive to kids?
Fun is a big selling point for kids. They now have so many options to entertain themselves at home in front of the 'screen'. Aside from parents' encouragement to get more active, we believe young people need programs that offer an experience, something they just can not get from a 'screen'.
Playing sports can be a great option, but only if it provides a fun, social and character-building experience. Doesn't it make sense for everyone involve in youth sports to create such an environment for kids playing sports?
