Almost every child wants to give up on things sometimes. And parents get tired of nagging. It's important not to give up so quickly. Kids tend to never begin again once they quit. They learn that it's ok not do something once it becomes hard.
Whether it's basketball, piano lessons or school work we need to help them understand that with hard work and persistence they will experience progress. Celebrate every progress!
We need to help kids enjoy the process. Watch them practice, encourage them, reward them for trying not for winning. When kids participate in any activity like sports they learn about self-motivation, discipline which are important life lessons.

Benefits of Sports for Children – 3-Part Article Series (Part. 1)
By MrExcellent.com Sports Staff
It’s been long known that sports provide children many benefits. At Mr. Excellent, we’re proud to have the opportunity to provide kids all the great things sports have to offer. Over the next few weeks, in this 3-part series, we will talk about some of these benefits.
Let’s start with the Physical Benefits:
Fitness. Kids who play sports develop general physical fitness in a fun way and they build lifelong healthy habits.
Stress relief. Basketball for example allows Kids to clear their minds of academic and social pressures. Joining a fun league or summer basketball camp can provide plenty of fun!
Mastery. Sports give kids a satisfying, enjoyable way to develop their own talents. Doing something well makes them feel good about themselves, but equally important, an excellent sports camp teaches them about the process of how to improve and work more effectively. The process of repetition teaches your young athlete how to master a move and also how to experiment with different approaches to improve a skill. The feedback in sports is usually immediate and visible-does the ball go into the basket?-so that the athlete can change or repeat what she's doing and figure out how to get better. Not only that, the whole process of seeing practice lead to improvement gives kids a feeling of control, a feeling all too rare in their lives.
Healthy habits. Because sports increase an awareness of one's body and how it responds to different stimuli and circumstances, sports help prevent drug and alcohol abuse. Most athletes value what their bodies can do and want to maintain those abilities. Being an athlete also gives kids an acceptable reason for telling their friends no to drugs, booze, and other high-risk, unhealthy behaviors. (Of course, not all athletes avoid drugs and alcohol.)
In the next part of this series, we’ll touch on the Personal Benefits such as leadership that sports offers children.

FREE BASKETBALL CLINIC OFFERED TO NORTH YORK KIDS!
4 incredible ways basketball can help your child
By MrExcellent.com
Boys and girls in Grades 1-8, of all skill levels, can try their hand at basketball for Free courtesy of coach Herold Excellent. Whether or not your child plays another sport, there are still 4 ways basketball can enhance their young athletic career:
1- Avoid early specialization and burnouts. Although, it’s a growing trend to specialize in one sport at early age, kids can certainly increase their potential ability in any particular sport by developing broad movement skills. Trying something new also keeps things fun and might relieve some pressure they get from playing one sport.
2- Basketball is fast-paced and fun, with lots of running and jumping. With the lack of physical activity trend, playing a little hoop helps kids stay in better shape!
3- The game offers a chance for kids to increase their confidence. Making a basket is such a confidence builder for kids. This can definitely carry over to another sport or even school.
4- The social aspect is terrific. Having a chance to make friends outside of their immediate circle can enhance their communication skill and ability to work on a team.
The clinic is hosted by Mr. Excellent and a group of friendly skilled basketball athletes. The focus is on fun and safety is a priority. The youth basketball clinic will take place in mid-December at an elementary school in the Don Mills area. Contact Mr. Excellent at 416-222-0211 for information about the exact date, time and location. Registration is happening and parents can register their child by calling 416-222-0211 or going online to www.mrexcellent.com
Mr. Excellent is also organizing an exciting winter youth recreational basketball league for kids ages 5-17 starting January 12 2008. If interested, please register early to avoid disappointment. Everyone who registers for this recreational youth basketball league also automatically enters our contest for a chance to win a brand new basketball!
